What is POS?

Statement of purpose refers to an essay that states your purpose of applying for a particular course or university is a document required by universities abroad. It is necessary to justify your intention to study abroad.

In order to better understand how to write a statement of purpose, let’s first learn about the SOP format and template, then look at some examples of statement of purpose for study abroad.

Statement of intent format and template

To get started, there are a few simple points to remember. Be sure to keep these on your SOP review checklist:

  • The statement of purpose runs in paragraph form and follows the general rules associated with writing an essay. Although the use of balls is accepted, it should be avoided and kept to a minimum.
  • Unless otherwise specified, a standard statement of intent is ideally two pages long, uses no more than 12 point font, and is double-spaced within normal margins. Therefore, depending on the font type, a standard SOP would be around 800 to 1000 words.
  • There should be no use of colored text or images anywhere. The text should be solid black (not even gray).

Apart from the obvious, there are simple templates for how you can present your statement of purpose. Ideally, a statement of intent should be around 5-7 paragraphs of around 150-250 words each. Below is a simple SOP template with a paragraph-by-paragraph explanation of the SOP format.

Simple POS template

A simple SOP template would help you write your SOP consisting of different information attached in a flow. An SOP consists of paragraphs which can be divided into headings for our understanding. These headings would help you identify what comes in which paragraph. Once your SOP is complete, all you need to do is ensure that all paragraphs follow a flow covering all essential information. A simple SOP template would look like this:

Understanding what to include and what not to include is fine. What is of utmost importance is having the right format. Like all professional documents, SOP also has a standard format which is followed by general universities. It is important to note that whether you are writing the statement of purpose for an MBA program, an MS program, or even one of the UG courses, the format would essentially remain the same. This article takes note of that.

SOP Paragraph 1: INTRODUCTION AND STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES

Use this space to talk about your purpose in life. You can be creative here and use analogies or quotes to make it more interesting. But, don’t waste a lot of space presenting your objective. The sooner you put it down, the better. Remember, this is an essay about your goals in life…so starting with that is always a good idea. It’s not much different from an essay on goals asked of MBA aspirants.

SOP Paragraphs 2 & 3: CAREER PROGRESSION

This is the para you usually use to talk about yourself. You can start with a brief history of yourself and your career progression from school to college. This is the paragraph that is usually dedicated to your academic activities. If you have work experience, you can limit your school life and talk more about your college in the second paragraph and move on to work experience in the third paragraph. If not, and you are applying directly after graduation or school, you can split para 2 for academics and para 3 for extracurriculars. You can take a hint on how to write about your career progression.

POS Paragraph 4: WHY?

This is the most important part of your statement of purpose because it is where you provide the reason why you want to do what you want to do. You can make it more interesting by recounting an incident that brings you to the decision or a turning point in your life. The more emphatic and passionate you are in this paragraph, the better your essay will be.

SOP Paragraph 5: HOW WILL YOU ACHIEVE YOUR OBJECTIVE?

You finally finish your dissertation. So far, you’ve talked about what you want to do, what brought you to this decision, and why you’re heading to this course. Now state how you intend to achieve your goals. If you want to get into the search, write it down. If you are considering working for a certain organization, write it down. It shows how well you have thought about your life. Also, give it periods of time…for example, I intend to work in industry for two years before starting my research program.

We have some examples of goal statements based on various study abroad programs such as MS, MBA, UG, and PhD.

Examples of SOPs for MS

Below are some examples of SOPs for MS (Masters), which have been accepted in popular schools abroad. Writing a statement of purpose for the MBA is slightly different from writing an MS SOP. Rather than looking like a geek, you need to look more versatile. Check out Writing Style for MBA SOP and SOP Sample for MBA.

Sample statement of intent for UG

A UG SOP differs from a master’s SOP because it has little or no work experience and no bachelor’s degree information with project information. Here, students should further mention their extracurricular activities. Their participation in quizzes, scientific competitions and sports carries a lot of weight.

Study Abroad Sample Statement of Purpose for USA, Canada, UK and Australia

You may be wondering what differs in the SOPs with the change in the country. It is important to note that the format of SOP remains the same for each country, unless specific requirement given by a university.

Some pointers that are often missed when writing an SOP

The most important points that you often miss in the SOPs are:

  • Career Goals: Simply writing that you have a childhood inclination towards a certain field would not make your SOP stronger. You should always be able to explain what you are aiming for in life by gaining knowledge in this area.
  • How college would help you achieve them: why do you want to join a particular college and how it would help you achieve your career goals, both are equally important. Writing that you are interested in joining a university abroad because of its location or infrastructure would not help.

Dos and Don’ts of a Statement of Purpose

Sure, your SOP should sound interesting and compelling, but it’s not okay for you to lie to make it interesting. Likewise, you would definitely want to take the help of samples available on the internet but, at the same time, you need to ensure that your SOP is not copied from anywhere. Giving little or no importance to facts and figures would reduce the quality of your drafts, while providing a lot of information is also not a good idea.
