Short break: Aptel East, Tower Hamlets, London, UK

The old adage “never judge a book by its cover” couldn’t be more true when it comes to Aptel East, an aparthotel in Tower Hamlets, east London . Flanked on either side by shops with graffiti-covered shutters, you could be forgiven for not realizing that here is one of the most luxurious places to stay in the area, because in this building there are around 30 apartments. elegant and fully equipped that bear the name of East Apartment.

Don’t pay attention to the immediate surroundings – Tripadvisor reviews say things like “I was wondering what my wife had booked. Inside it was quite the opposite. and I guess that’s a common sentiment as the initial alarm of guests quickly turns to unexpected delight once inside.

Check-in was really fast. I received an email from Aptel East the day before my arrival, inviting me to a faster online check-in. With just one click, I confirmed my details and checked in using a digital check-in solution called GuestStay, a seamless, contactless experience provided by Guestline®️.

This meant that when I arrived I did not need to use any of the check-in terminals in the foyer. Although I reached the hotel quite late in the evening, I simply rang the bell (there is a 24 hour concierge), gave my name and was given my key. The whole process took less than 10 seconds before taking the elevator to my apartment.

I stayed in room 33 on the fifth and top floor of this sustainable building with its green roof and high tech energy efficient systems.

This stylish and fully equipped modern apartment sleeps two people with a luxury king size bed (with hypoallergenic bedding made exclusively for Aptel East) in a spacious bedroom with a blackout blind, in addition to the curtain you see. The view from the apartment overlooks Tower Hamlets, with The Shard visible in the distance to the right.

The air-conditioned bedroom is spacious, with wood-effect laminate flooring, a wall-mounted 43-inch TV, safe, seating area and kitchenette in the corner.

The bathroom

The bright, uncluttered and modern bathroom with its monsoon shower, washbasin and WC, has light-coloured wall tiles which contrast with the dark tiles and vanity units.

Bathrobes and fluffy towels and flannels are provided, along with toiletries and travel soap from DAMANA®, specialists in exclusive hotel amenities.

The installations

The kitchenette is equipped with a kettle, toaster and microwave, as well as a miniature sink.

There are also crockery, cutlery, glasses and a small fridge – basically everything you would need to have cereal or toast in the morning, make a sandwich during the day or even cook yourself a meal in the microwave. evening waves.

For serious foodies looking for something more, there are several Michelin-starred restaurants a short taxi ride away, with Behind Restaurant (one star), City Social (one star), Lyle’s (one star), Sollip (one star), St John’s Restaurant (one star) and The Clove Club (two stars) all within a 10-15 minute drive.

The accommodation also comes with a private super-fast 5G internet connection.

Being an apartment within a hotel, you really have everything you need for a comfortable home away from home for a short city break. If you need anything, however, the 24-hour concierge is on hand and can be contacted via your cell phone, and housekeeping is available for longer stays.

The accommodation is located close to the Royal London Hospital, within walking distance of some of London’s most iconic destinations including Spitalfields, Shoreditch, Tower Bridge, St Katherine Docks and Hackney, all of which are easily accessible by public transport and accessible on foot. Shadwell (on the DLR and London Skytrain) and Whitechapel (on the District, Elizabeth, Hammersmith and City lines, as well as the London Skyline) and are each a short walk away, as are Liverpool Street, Aldgate East and Tower Hill subway stations.

While there I attended the World Travel Market at ExCel London which was so easy to get to with Custom House just a few stops away along the new Elizabeth line.

Other little touches

A welcome note and drinks and chips, plus a fridge stocked with bottled water, were some of the nice little extras. The non-intrusive communication via WhatsApp was also excellent and very convenient, and came with an assurance on arrival that the team are available 24 hours a day and more than happy to help with anything, along with a password WiFi pass. They also used it to notify me of the arrival of an Amazon package I had ordered and to ask me if my room needed sprucing up when I forgot to turn off my door hanger to inform them.

Aptel East’s standard suites start from just £109 per night.

The best piece

For the price, I can’t think of better quality accommodation anywhere in London. You can find yourself paying less than for a Premier Inn room, while getting so much more in terms of quality, space and in-room amenities.

The final verdict

For me the Aptel East accommodation was an ideal base for a work trip, with excellent access to my conference venue, but it would serve just as well for leisure breaks. It is also very convenient for anyone out of town visiting patients at the Royal London Hospital.

Finally, it is exceptionally cheap for quality accommodation in London which is notoriously much more expensive and, the few times I needed to speak to the concierge team, they were always lovely and couldn’t be more happy to help you .
